The First Doctor Visits Modern-Day Britain!
Full story details are today revealed for the forthcoming box set of First Doctor audio dramas, due for release in February 2023 from Big Finish Productions.
The First Doctor (Stephen Noonan) teams up with Demon Hunter Daniel De’ath (Henry Nott) to find his companion Dodo Chaplet (Lauren Cornelius) in the first of two full-cast audio adventures. Then the 1960s time-travelling duo explore their recent past in The Incherton Incident.
Doctor Who – The First Doctor Adventures: The Demon Song is now available to pre-order for just £19.99 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) £16.99 (download only), exclusively here.
The two Earth-based adventures in this box set are:
The Demon Song by Bob Ayres
Managing to land the TARDIS in Dodo’s far-flung future, the 2020s, the Doctor detects a haunting melody on the streets of Camden. People are going missing, and one of them is Dodo!
First-time Big Finish writer Bob Ayres said: “The inspiration for this story came from lots of different directions. I was trying to think of ideas that would use the audio medium well and music was an obvious thing to explore. I also started thinking about the kind of creatures that might use music as a language.
“I really wanted to see how the First Doctor would interact with the 2020s. As we’re going into the 60th anniversary year, it’s a chance to see the First Doctor 60 years on still battling monsters.”
The Incherton Incident by Nicholas Briggs
Something intercepts the TARDIS in space. Attempting to escape its grip, the Doctor inadvertently drags it through time to coastal England in 1947. As the nation recovers from World War Two, an alien force threatens total destruction.
Director and Writer Nicholas Briggs said: “I wanted to do a historical that they wouldn’t have done on television back in the 1960s because it would’ve felt too recent. I think people forget how different the UK was in post-war – with the different attitudes and harsh feelings of paranoia.
“There’s nothing more calming and comforting to me than a British seaside setting. [I was influenced by the idea of] turning supposedly reassuring and friendly things into something really threatening by taking a beautiful seaside village and smashing it to bits.”
Further cast confirmed for this box set include Doctor Who’s Bhavnisha Parmar (as Archana “Archie” Pawar) alongside Paksie Vernon (as Sanderson), and Genevieve Gaunt (as Virginia Hancock).
