The first season of The Fourth Doctor Adventures began with a run of six stories. Kenny Smith takes us on a trip back in time... 

Destination: Nerva by Nicholas Briggs
The Doctor and Leela respond to an alien distress call beamed direct from Victorian England. It is the beginning of a journey that will take them to the newly built Space Dock Nerva… where a long overdue homecoming is expected. A homecoming that could bring about the end of the human race.

Nick: "David Richardson had the idea of a Nerva story. He asked me to do it, which I was delighted to do. Aware that it would be a largely sci-fi, hardware story, set on a space station, I wanted to give it as much of a broad Fourth Doctor era appeal as possible. Shiny corridors and space are a very important part of that era, but I was aware many people remembered it for the dark stately homes and the historical settings…"

The Renaissance Man by Justin Richards
The TARDIS lands in a quiet English village, where they meet the enigmatic collector Harcourt and his family. When people start to die, reality doesn’t appear quite what it was. There’s something sinister going on within the walls of Harcourt’s manor, and the stakes are higher than they can imagine.

Justin: "I've always thought that the Doctor in general, and the Fourth Doctor in particular is a sort of 'Renaissance Man' in that he comes as close as anyone can to knowing everything about everything.  It's always good to have a villain or opponent who is a sort of distorted reflection of the hero, so I decided that an aspirant 'renaissance man' should be the enemy."

The Wrath of the Iceni by John Dorney
The Doctor has brought Leela to Britain at the height of the Roman occupation to learn about her ancestors…  This is the time of Boudica’s rebellion. When the tribe of the Iceni rises up and attempts to overthrow the Roman masters. Should the Doctor save his friend… or save history itself?

John Dorney: "The brief was 'Romans in Britain'. I remember getting told this on what might have been the first Tom recording day with the additional info that there was no rush to come up with an idea. I woke up in the middle of the night and thought 'Leela meets Boudica. Yeah, that's it'."

Energy of the Daleks by Nicholas Briggs
The Doctor and Leela find themselves in the middle of London at the time of a new energy crisis in 21st century London. The GlobeSphere Corporation seems to have all the answers – but several thousand protestors beg to differ. What is the connection between the National Gallery and a base on the Moon?

Nick: "The story had been inspired by two documentaries I’d seen. One was about how it would be fairly easy to set up solar panels on the Moon and beam the energy back to Earth; the other was about how crucial the relative positions of the Earth and Moon are. One little shift in orbit and we’d be screwed. So, I thought, that’s just the kind of thing the Daleks might do to get rid of the human race. Why would they want to do that?" 

Trail of the White Worm by Alan Barnes
The Doctor and Leela arrive in the wilds of Derbyshire, only to get caught up in the hunt for a missing girl, they soon discover that the legend of the White Worm - a tale that dates back to Roman times is very much alive - even now, in 1979.  And the Doctor's the only renegade Time Lord on the trail of this mysterious creature…

Alan Barnes: "Trail of the White Worm and The Oseidon Adventure are linked. So really, I ought to start by acknowledging the influence of mad-as-a-box-of-frogs, magnificent director Ken Russell, since deceased, whose feverishly demented not-in-all-honesty-very-good film The Lair of the White Worm, was based on Bram Stoker's feverishly demented but not-in-all-honestly-very-good novel."

The Oseidon Adventure by Alan Barnes
The Doctor is a prisoner on the Kraals' radiation-blasted home planet of Oseidon. Marshal Grinmal and his belligerent cohorts are ready to invade, and Chief Scientist Tyngworg has not just one plan, but a back-up plan, and a back-up back-up plan worked out. Only Leela and unlikely ally - the Master - can save the day.

Alan Barnes: "The challenge was to come up with a feverishly demented, mad-as-a-box-of-frogs plan for the Master to execute, one that we hadn't seen before. My solution is contained within... and involves the Kraals, once-only stars of The Android Invasion - no strangers to feverishly demented, mad-as-a-box-of-frogs plans themselves."
